Within the framework of the Colourful Cooperation project, implemented with the support of the INTERREG IPA CBC Hungary-Serbia Program, the Egy-Másért Youth and Community Development Association is establishing a Serbian Cultural Center, providing a space for meetings and events for the Serbian-Hungarian population along the border, which mutually assists both nations in preserving cultural values and heritage.
Mórahalom will host the construction of the cultural center. The nurturing and preservation of Serbian and Hungarian cultural identity go beyond presenting the traditions and customs of the two nations. The inter-nationality, an important characteristic of these two peoples, forms a cultural crucible where the ideology of coexistence and living side-by-side represents significant social progress. Therefore, in our national cultures, we must continuously look outwards at the influences on public education, folk art, traditions, and religious life. This kind of commitment also characterizes the KOLO Serbian Cultural Center in Mórahalom.
The KOLO Center aims to be a home for Serbian, Balkan culture, but Hungarian multi-artistry, which runs parallel to it, will also find a home here. Hungary, paying special attention to the Balkans as one of Eastern Europe's most powerful cultural transmitters, will take professional responsibility in the future and focus on presenting the diversity of values and commonalities on a European platform. Mórahalom is the flagship of everything we could define as the „Gateway to the Balkans.”.
The impressive presence of the Kolo Center, integrated into the region's cultural bloodstream, and emphasizing the important role of gastronomy, aims to provide a new type of gastronomic experience by combining Balkan culinary art and creativity. The essence of this is to connect culture and cuisine to promote the multitude of values inherent in the cultural intertwining of the two nations as widely as possible. A gastro-space and grill terrace will be created to be suitable for organizing gastronomic events, cooking clubs, meetings, and occasional catering for cultural events.
An Orthodox chapel has been established in the building. The ”LIFE-GIVING SPRING” chapel contributes to the free religious practice of Orthodox Christian guests visiting here. Our religious commitment focuses on presenting Orthodox religious culture. Our celebrations offer opportunities for cultural reflection, attention, and discovering the values within others.
According to our plans, the Kolo Serbian Cultural Center can be a home for all those who wish to spend their free time in Mórahalom, seeking relaxation, rest, cultural enrichment, or conscious cultural exploration.
By providing space for diplomatic consultations and the close cultural-political relationship between the two nations, we hope to welcome the political, cultural, social, educational, and religious leaders of both countries as regular guests. We aspire to be a diplomatic focal point for the region, as we believe our city has a strong foundation to be creators in the life of our region, beyond the protocolary processes of establishing and nurturing connections.
In the future, the Kolo Center will embody the diversity of our values, culture, roots, and worldview, transmitted to future generations. Our task is that upon reaching the next stage of development, they can say about us: we received it from our ancestors, with love. Through this, we fulfill our mission, and they can rightly say about us, Mórahalom, the Gateway to the Balkans.
